A famous Rwandan gospel singer who was convicted and sentenced in relation to the case of conspiracy with intent to murder or harm Rwanda President Paul Kagame in 2015 has been found dead in a police cell in the capital, Kigali. in what police officials believe to be a suicide.
The deceased, Kizito Mihigo, aged 38, is an ethnic Tutsi survivor of the 1994 genocide that killed more than 800,000 Tutsi and moderate Hutus who tried to defend them.
As stated by the authorities the man killed himself on Monday morning.
It is known that the musician was apprehended again three days ago over what police reported was a violation of the terms of his release ‘by trying to leave the country without permission and attempting to bribe Rwandans who spotted him trying to cross into neighbouring Burundi’.
In the Thursday’s tweet, the Rwanda Investigations Bureau claimed that the country’s security department had handed over Mihigo, saying the charges against him included illegally crossing to Burundi, joining “terrorist” groups and corruption.
The Rwandan police command briefed the media that investigations have begun to ascertain why the famous detainee ‘took his own life’.
