Recently, standardmedia.co.ke reported that war-torn Ethiopia has shifted some of its imports and exports away from Djibouti's port to Kenya's Mombasa and Lamu ports, This is a blatant lies.


Cash-strapped Kenya has consistently and repeatedly offered its Mombasa and Lamu ports to landlocked Ethiopia which rely exclusively on Djibouti to conduct global trade, however, poverty and violence ravaged landlocked Ethiopia isn't interested in using Mombasa and Lamu ports for three very good reasons but it will definitely continue to pay lip service to Kenya’s government.

  • Reason number one


    War-torn Ethiopia, with a population of over 120 million imports and exports very little, its exports are mainly agricultural commodities such as coffee, cut flowers, very small gold, khat, fruits and vegetables, which account for over 98 percent of total export value, It's five times the value of what Djibouti, with a population of less than 1 million people imports and exports, One port is more than enough.

  • Reason number two





    There is no road connecting Mombasa and Lamu port to Isiolo therefor truck drivers cannot drive from Mombasa and Lamu ports to war-torn Ethiopia, The construction of 530 kilometers Lamu-Garissa-Isiolo road was started in 2016 but has never been completed but more importantly, the distance between Lamu port and Moyale Ethiopia border is 978 kilometers and the distance between Lamu port and Addis Ababa is 1.883 kilometers, while the distance between Djibouti port and Ethiopia's Afar region border is less than 150 kilometers, It takes less than two hour, on an average, for a truck to reach Ethiopia's Afar border, Now compare that to Mombasa and Lamu.






The total driving distance from Djibouti port to Ethiopia's Afar region border is less than 150 kilometers.


  • Reason number three


    Rampant cargo theft, bribery and corruption in Kenyan ports, Kenyan port staff and customs officials are stealing cargo containers bound for the neighbouring landlocked countries from Mombasa port.

How thieves accessed KPA systems to steal hundreds of containers

The usernames and passwords of two retired employees of the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) were mysteriously activated and used to clear hundreds of containers at the Mombasa port, a court was told yesterday.

The hijacking of the two accounts led to losses amounting to Sh106 million in unpaid customs duty in one case where 124 containers were released before import duty was paid.

In another case, 150 containers were released without duty being paid on them using an account and password that were non-existent in official records.

Tighten cargo clearance controls at Mombasa port

Analysis into the corruption at Mombasa port

It has been reported that Kenya’s Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is working in partnership with international security agencies such as Interpol and Britain to assist with the investigation of corruption allegations involving cargo theft at the port of Mombasa.

Djibouti is irreplaceable, It has proved itself to be very reliable and trustworthy country but if miserable war-torn Ethiopia continues spreading blatantly lies about Djibouti, Djibouti would probably suspend the transit of imported and exported goods through its ports into war-torn Ethiopia.

In 2021 Kenya Ports Authority Board Chairman General Joseph Kibwana said plans are underway to have cargo destined for war-torn landlocked Ethiopia be transported from Mombasa via the Standard Gauge Railway to Nairobi then to Nanyuki via the refurbished railway line.“The cargo will then be moved with truck to Moyale,” that is desperate times call for desperate measures.

The Chinese-built 752.7-km Ethiopia-Djibouti railway earned 2.84 billion Ethiopian birr (about 50 million U.S. dollars) in the first nine months of the current Ethiopian fiscal year 2023/2024, which started on July 8, 2023, an Ethiopian official said Wednesday.

ADDIS ABABA, April 18 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese-built 752.7-km Ethiopia-Djibouti railway earned 2.84 billion Ethiopian birr (about 50 million U.S. dollars) in the first nine months of the current Ethiopian fiscal year 2023/2024, which started on July 8, 2023, an Ethiopian official said Wednesday.

Speaking to state media outlet Ethiopian Press Agency, Aminu Juhar, chief corporate strategy officer at the Ethiopia-Djibouti Standard Gauge Railway Share Company (EDR), said the revenue generated is up by about 1.12 million U.S. dollars compared to the same period last year.

The rail line served 148,664 passengers during the first nine months of the 2023/2024 fiscal year, an increase of 15 percentage points compared to the same period last year, Juhar said.

He said the increases in the EDR's revenue and passenger figures were achieved despite challenges such as the ongoing security crisis in the Red Sea region and recent floods that affected Djibouti Port.

The Ethiopia-Djibouti standard gauge railway, also known as the Addis Ababa-Djibouti railway, was contracted by China Railway Engineering Corporation and China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation.

The railway began commercial operations for both passenger and freight services in January 2018, connecting landlocked Ethiopia to ports in the Red Sea (the Gulf of Berbera also known as the Gulf of Aden) country of Djibouti.

Chinese-built Ethiopia-Djibouti railway earns 50 mln USD in 9 months

The title is misleading, because Addis–Djibouti Railway was financed by a loan from China's Exim Bank and built by China Railway Group and China Civil Engineering Construction and therefore China's Exim Bank earns 50 mln USD in 9 months.


Anyway, we are at the mercy of hard working Somali men and women, without Djibouti, war-torn Ethiopia economy is doomed, So let me repeat again, On behalf of Ethiopia's eighty five different ethnic groups, I want to thank you Djibouti for your excellent and trustworthy service, we are doomed without Djibouti.

Kenyans - celebrating too early.



Lamu Governor Issa Timamy described the port as a game changer.

“It is up to us, residents, to take advantage of the opportunities that will come with this port to prosper economically,” he said.

Timamy said the Lapsset road connecting Lamu to Ethiopia through Ijara, Garissa, onwards to Isiolo and to Moyale, should be fast-tracked.

“It is our prayer that the road is completed on time to efficiently transport goods to Ethiopia,” he said.

This is the first time war-torn Ethiopia is importing 60,000 tonnes of fertilizer through Kenyan Port from Morocco and it will be the last time, Cash-strapped Kenya is very happy now but I am sure it will be very disappointed soon.

Djibouti International Free Trade Zone

this free zone even might attract Ethiopian investors because the Djibouti have free tax to export to USA UNLIKE Ethiopia..

look their policy currency policy and other policy that make them more attractive the Ethiopia still can make money by selling power to Djibouti if everything fail

history tells us that Askaris hate and despise Ethiopia to the bone, but second on the list of their enemy is Djibouti for the obvious reason that it is a gateway and peaceful neighbor to Ethiopia. lately Somaliland appear to make the list for these evils and may top Djibouti as Ethiopia is to begin utilizing Berbera. nothing is working for Askaris :lol: :lol: :lol:
