Ethiopia's Slow Recovery for Rape Victims in Tigray

More than 120,000 women were sexually abused during the war in the Ethiopian province of Tigray between 2020 and 2022. Despite efforts from NGOs, healthcare professionals, and lawyers, many victims are left to fend for themselves.

Mihret* wipes her tears on her white shawl, a traditional fabric worn by Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church followers: “It was two months ago. Eight Eritrean soldiers came into my house while a woman in uniform stood guard at the door. They told me that Tigrayans shouldn't live and that, as a Tigrayan, I shouldn't have children. They then raped me in front of my five children.” The 40-year-old sought help in one of the seven emergency clinics opened in Adigrat, a northern Ethiopian city, to care for and counsel victims of sexual violence.

Despite the official end of the war in Tigray in 2022, every day, the One-Stop Center receives new victims, adding to the more than 120,000 rape cases recorded by local authorities since the conflict began in 2020. Eritrean troops, who supported the central government in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian army, and their allies, the militias from Amhara, the neighboring region, are all accused of participating in this widespread sexual violence.

Tragic Shipwreck of 20 Ethiopian Migrants off Yemen Coast Leaves 12 Tigrayans Dead and 4 Missing

This new shipwreck underscores the urgent need for increased humanitarian aid and enhanced safety measures along perilous migration routes.

Ta’iz, 26 July – A new shipwreck occurred off the coast of Yemen on Wednesday (24/07), resulting in the death of 12 migrants and leaving four individuals missing. According to the survivors, the vessel, carrying 20 Ethiopian migrants predominantly from the Tigray region, capsized near the Dubab district in the Ta’iz governorate.

“This latest incident underscores the urgent need for enhanced safety measures and collaborative efforts to protect migrants,” said Matt Huber, Acting Chief of Mission for the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Yemen. “The alarming increase in shipwrecks and migrant deaths is a stark reminder of the perils faced by those fleeing desperate conditions. IOM is prepared to offer support as needed, and our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this difficult time.”

The boat, which departed from Djibouti on Tuesday at 9 pm, capsized early Wednesday morning due to strong winds and a malfunctioning engine. Of the 22 passengers, six survived, including the Yemeni boat captain and his assistant. Two bodies of a man and a woman were recovered and buried by local authorities, with the remaining individuals still unaccounted for.

August 8, 2024

23 civilians are reportedly killed and four others injured where a minibus carrying 27 passengers was hit by DShK.

According to an Ethiopian Media Services (EMS) report – which cited residents from the area – the minibus was traveling from Gundowoyn to Bahir Dar. The Minibus was ditched to Abaya river, the source added.

Residents from the area are cited as saying that government forces carried out the attack.

Yohanned Alemayehu, deputy public relation head of Gojam Fano, on Thursday spoke to EMS. He confirmed the attack.

The source added that the attempt to get remarks from the Ethiopian Defense Force was unsuccessful.

Horus doesn't give a sh'it about the dreadful lives which his Gurage people are living, or Ethiopia. He's in his eighties and is probably in a nursing home and is on this forum just to entertain his loneliness and boredom.

Attack In Southern Ethiopia Kills 13

By AFP - Agence France Presse August 22, 2024

Thirteen people, including five civilians, were killed in an attack by unidentified assailants in the far south of Ethiopia, the local authority said Thursday.

The three-day attack starting late August 17 took place in the Segen district in the Konso area, with the assailants "killing eight police officers and five civilians", said Serawit Dibaba, spokesman for the local communications affairs department.

"The extremist group has fled the affected area after committing the attack," he told AFP, without giving further information about the assailants.

Serawit said the group had previously engaged in "various crimes including murders and property arson", and had been responsible for the murder of a policeman last month.

"The security forces are patrolling the area and conducting operations to control remnants of the extremist force," he added.

The Konso Zone Government Communication office also confirmed the death toll in a post on Facebook late Wednesday.

It said the assailants had set fire to and destroyed numerous official buildings, including the district administrative office, police station, and a conference hall, as well as destroying generators.

Other items, including hospital equipment and official vehicles, were looted, it added.

Deadly violence has erupted in the area several times in the past, with intercommunal conflict in 2022 displacing about 37,000 people, according to a UN report at the time.

At least 13 people have died and 14 missing after a boat carrying 25 Ethiopian migrants sunk off Yemen's coast, UN says

25 Aug 2024

At least 13 people have died and 14 others are missing after a boat sank off the coast of Yemen, the United Nations migration agency has said.

“A migrant boat capsized off the coast of Yemen’s Taiz governorate on Tuesday,” the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said in a statement on Sunday.

The boat, which departed from Djibouti carrying 25 Ethiopians and two Yemeni nationals, sank near Dubab district in Bani al-Hakam subdistrict, it added.

Eleven men and two women were among those confirmed dead as a search operation continues to locate the missing, including the Yemeni captain and his assistant, the IOM said.

It noted that the cause of the shipwreck remains unclear.

“This latest tragedy is a stark reminder of the perils faced by migrants on this route,” said Matt Huber, the acting chief of IOM’s mission in Yemen.

“Every life lost in these dangerous waters is one too many, and it is imperative that we do not normalise these devastating losses and instead work collectively to ensure that migrants are protected and supported throughout their journeys.”

IOM provides post-arrival assistance for 13,600 returnees through funding received from King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief)

30 August 2024

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) provided post-arrival assistance to 13,600 returnees from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) in recent months, using funds from King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSRelief).
The post-arrival assistance was given at the IOM Transit Center and government-run shelter in Addis Ababa from mid-October 2023 to date, with the project coming to an end in mid-October 2024.

Through this support, the returnees were provided with shelter services and non-food items upon arrival in Addis Ababa, and transportation assistance to reach their hometowns. “Most returnees do not have the means to return home, so we offer this support to ensure they can make their way back to their hometowns safely and in dignity,” says Pekka Marjamäki, IOM Ethiopia’s Return and Reintegration Programme Officer.

The project contributes to IOM’s efforts to ensure that the needs identified in the Regional Migration Response Plan (MRP) for the Horn of Africa to Yemen and Southern Africa are met through humanitarian, protection, and developmental support .
Despite the Ethiopian government’s significant efforts to address the adverse drivers of irregular migration, thousands of undocumented migrants leave the country annually seeking jobs and livelihoods. The primary routes taken for this migration are the Eastern route to the Gulf States, the Southern route to South Africa, and the Northern route to Europe. Among these, the Eastern route is the most commonly used by Ethiopian migrants.

Of the 53,894 returnees who received assistance from IOM in Ethiopia in 2023, over 52,000 came from Yemen, Djibouti, Somalia and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This accounts for 97 per cent of all returnees, showing that most assistance focuses on returns from the Eastern route, which leads migrants mainly towards the KSA. Among those assisted in 2023, close to 4,000 were children, while 41,551 were men and 6,572 women.

In addition to post-arrival support, IOM provides reintegration support when funding allows. In 2023 alone, the Organization supported over 575 returnees with reintegration.

With more Ethiopians expected to be returned from KSA this year, IOM remains committed to supporting the Government of Ethiopia’s post-arrival response, working with MRP partners in the region.

Generous funding from the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) has enabled IOM to provide this post-arrival assistance to returnees from Saudi Arabia.
