1883, New York slang for "fastidious man, fop", originally a term of contempt. Probably from a shortening of Low German dudendop, dudenkop, dudeldop (a lazy fellow), related to Eastern Frisian dudkop, duddekop (a blockhead or drowsy fellow), German Dude (a foolish fellow), Eastern Frisian dudden (to be drowsy).
